Report from Jubilee USA Grassroots Organizing Conference
posted under
Imagine someone charged $1 million on a credit card with your name on it - when you were only 6 months old...and you are expected to pay it back?! Doesn't sound fair, does it? That's what has happened to countries all over the world whose leaders (often dictators, corrupt, illegitimate) have racked up millions or even billions of dollars worth of debt, and their citizens suffer the consequences. This debt inhibits countries from spending money on true necessities, such as medical care, education and food.
Chris and I got to spend the weekend in Chicago at Jubilee USA's 2nd annual grassroots organizing conference. It was a fabulous weekend, so I wanted to pass on some information. Hundreds of activists from all over the world gathered to celebrate victories of the debt cancellation movement, and get jazzed up for the legislative and spiritual work to come.
Through the work of people of faith and other activists, 20 countries' debt has been cancelled. But there are 67 countries remaining with odious and disastrous debt. There is momentum in congress to reduce or end this ridiculous modern slavery, so encourage Mike Pence (or whoever your representative is) to sign on to HR 2634 and help break the chains of debt!
