Bethany Theological Seminary's Huston Peace Lecture Series will take place Oct. 19-20. Robert Johansen, senior fellow and professor of political science at the University of Notre Dame, will be the guest lecturer.

On Thursday at 7 p.m., Johansen will speak on "The Politics of Love, War, and Peace: Understanding Moral Responsibility." The title of the Friday lecture, at 11:20 a.m., is "The Promise of the Rule of Law in Global Society: Accepting International Moral Responsibility."

The Untouchable Times Speakeasy Gala is happening 6:30-11 p.m. this Saturday at Forest Hills Country Club. The gala will feature the West End Jazz Band from Chicago with 1920s dances performed in costume by the Flying Cloud Academy of Vintage Dance of Cincinnati. The event is a benefit for the Starr-Gennett Foundation, which seeks to promote and preserve the legacy of Gennett Records and its parent organization, the Starr Piano Company.

Three free workshops will be offered Nov. 3 and 4 to help parents and children develop a more healthy and functional family.

Dr. Matthew Johnson will lead the sessions. He is a licensed clinical psychologist in Grants Pass, Ore., and is the author of "Positive Parenting with a Plan: FAMILY Rules" and is the president and founder of FAMILY RULES Inc.

The Wayne and Union Counties Solid Waste Management District has scheduled events to celebrate America Recycles Day on Nov. 4 at Richmond Square Mall. The events -- which will feature crafts, displays, "Richie The Recycling Racoon," activities, giveaways and booths with recycling information -- will be conducted from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

From the Pal-Item: Indianapolis poet Fran Quinn will give a public reading of his work at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the community room of Whitewater Hall on the Indiana University East campus.

After the reading, Quinn will serve as guest lecturer in an evening creative writing course, "Vision and Revision." The university's division of humanities and fine arts has arranged Quinn's visit, which is not his first. "He has visited us before to speak, read to classes, and teach magazine editing skills to our students," said T.J. Rivard, chairman of the division. "His visit here will give students the opportunity to work with an established writer and to learn more from his experiences in writing, publishing and editing. "... Quinn is a very engaging reader and never fails to surprise and delight his audience," Rivard said. Quinn's poetry collections include "Milk of the Lioness," "The Goblet Crying for Wine" and "A Horse of Blue Ink." For more information, call (765) 973-8229.

Peace Forum--Advocating for Survivors of Sexual Assault. This week's Forum is organized by Sadie Forsythe, ESR student and Earlham College graduate. Sadie has been working with Earlham students who are advocates for those who have experienced sexual assault. A panel of students will address this issue along with Sadie. Join us for an afternoon concert with Mushabac, an award-winning cellist both here and abroad. Mushabac, professor of cello at the Baldwin-Wallace College Conservatory of Music in Cleveland, Ohio, was trained by some of the era's most distinguished cellists. She studied at Juilliard with Leonard Rose and continued with Janos Starker at Indiana University, becoming his teaching assistant. In addition to the complete standard repertoire, Mushabac is well known for her exploration of new music. She has performed dozens of world premieres and can be heard in solo recordings on GM Recording Label, Trumedia Records, and New World Records. Earlham Professor of Music Emerita Eleanore Vail is the accompanist for this concert.

f.a.d.e.-IN (Focusing on Art, Diversity, and Education - Indiana) is a monthly film screening series that will showcase a variety of films that fall outside the box of mainstream cinema and may not have been shown in our area. Presented by the Richmond Art Museum and assisted by a generous grant from the Wayne County Indiana Foundation, the series will include independent, foreign, and experimental films, and a scattering of older studio works worth another look.
