Bicycle maps of the Richmond area

posted under

I'm in the brainstorming stage of a project to produce bike-friendly maps of Richmond, Indiana and the surrounding areas. These maps might include:

- An around-town tour of tourist attractions reasonable to visit by bike.
- Preferred roads to get around town by bike.
- Suggested routes for longer day trips from Richmond by bike
(10 to 100 mile loops)

One starting point adding routes with notations into http://www.bikely.com. It is designed for sharing information about bike routes.

However, I wasn't very satisfied with my test run:

The comment I added isn't displayed directly with the route, and it didn't remember that I lived near "Richmond, Indiana", or make it easy overlay a collection of local routes on the screen. However, it appears to be growing and changing fast.

Inspiration and help wanted!

Update: local bike mapping is well underway

The local bike mapping project did get launched, and can be followed on bikerichmond.org.

wikwalki: A better bikely?

I've found a collaborative community mapping system that I like better than bikely. It's wikiwalki.

One thing I like is the option to see a view of all the routes in the area at once:

bike routes around Richmond, Indiana

You can also see the details of a single route, including the description:

comments on North E. Street.

So, start adding your favorite bike routes, or just comments about bike commuting on particular streets.

Let's collaborate!
