Buy garlic, save farmland!
posted under
Earlham alumni Dan Hobbs and Allison Kinsey have an opportunity for you to be part of protecting the Earth this Earth Day!
Dan has been a top-notch organic farmer and leader of various sustainable agricultural nonprofit organizations for the last 20 years. He's trying to protect prime farmland from development by buying the family farm adjacent to his farm to keep it in active agricultural use.
Dan and Allison are funding the land acquisition by selling shares of their exceptional organic heirloom garlic. The farm grows several stunning varieties--Music Pink (try it for the name alone!) Romanian Red, etc. They're asking folks to buy a 3-year share or 1/2 share, which means you'll be shipped a mix of all the varieties they grow each year.
A full share gets you 10 pounds of garlic a year. The pricing works out to about $10/pound with shipping included. (Expensive garlic, but you can plant it and get a great yield in your own garden, and it's a good cause!)
The garlic keeps for at least 9 months. Rarely do good acts and delicious outcomes combine so nicely. They'll stop making this available when they reach their goal and are halfway there at this point http://www.coloradogarlic.com/garlicstore.htm .
Thanks to Trish Eckert for this news!
