Richmond alternative transportation planning
Aug 10th
On Wednesday, August 18 and Thursday, August 19, transportation planners from LSL Planning and Parsons Brinkerhoff will be in town to meet with people who have thoughts and suggestions on improving alternative transportation modes in Richmond, Indiana. The result of the meetings will be a transportation plan that will replace the City of Richmond’s existing 1980s document.
The plan is being funded through the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency Conservation Block Grant program so the emphasis will be on efficient transportation routes and alternative transportation opportunities. The process will also help us create a Complete Streets policy statement. Other groups the consultants will meet with include the Richmond Citizens with Disabilities Council, National Road Heritage Trail, Inc., Independent Living Center and even AARP who is going to train volunteers on surveying accessibility in their own neighborhoods.
All meetings will be in the Community Room of the Richmond Municipal Building, 50 North 5th Street. Although the main portion of the public input will be on the 18th from noon to 4 p.m., the planners will be available at other times as needed.
For more information, contact Scott Zimmerman, City Planner, 765.983.7343.
New website collects community improvement ideas for Richmond
Mar 19th
RichmondBrainstorm.com may be an online destination, but it was created to help make the real world a better place. The new website collects ideas from Richmond, Indiana residents about how to make the community a better place to live, work and play.
Visitors to the site can submit their ideas into a number of categories – from Arts and Culture to Government, Historic Preservation to Technology – and explain why they think implementing the idea would benefit the community. Then other site users can review the ideas and vote on them, comment on them, and even share related success stories.
“It’s a collaborative way to hold up all of the great ideas floating around this community for making it a better place,” said Chris Hardie, the site’s creator. “It’s a way to share in creating each others` visions for a better future, and to know we have the resources right here for doing that.”

Richmond CLEAN Community Goals
Apr 23rd
On April 24, 2008, Richmond will be celebrating its designation as an Indiana CLEAN Community. The Indiana Comprehensive Local Environmental Action Network (CLEAN) Community Challenge is a voluntary recognition program for local Indiana government. CLEAN helps communities take steps to plan, develop, and implement a quality of life plan. This plan includes gathering input and support from the community and local businesses.
The City of Richmond, working through the Richmond Wayne County Environmental Awareness Council, has developed a Quality of Life Plan (QLP). It is similar in concept to an environmental management program (ISO: 14000) used by many businesses. CLEAN actions are in keeping with the sustainability commitments of the Strategic Plan.
Here are the five CLEAN goals for Richmond:
Action Items for Building a Self-Reliant Richmond, Indiana
Dec 2nd
Chris Hardie writes:
This blog entry is a repository of personal “action items” that I suggest when I give my talk entitled “Going Local: Building a Self-Reliant Richmond, Indiana.” As I say in the talk:
- You may already know a lot of this stuff
- I don’t like telling people how to live, and I very much still aspire to practice some of these things myself, so I don’t offer these up with any sort of moral authority
- This can be thought of as a menu of possibilities, rather than a list of imperatives or instructions
If you’re not completely sure why it might be a good thing for Richmond to become self-reliant or why these action items might help, then please invite me to give the talk for your group or organization. It’s chock full of great information about the energy crisis, climate change, the economy, and the implications for life in Richmond and Wayne County, Indiana. I also tell some jokes.
Now, on to the list, which is largely centered on reducing our dependence on and usage of fossil fuels:
