Alex is a senior History major at Earlham College, and has been a impressive student activist and leader. He has been instrumental in Earlham's Bike Co-op, a writer for the Earlham Active, and involved in a variety of environmental activism.

Tactical Direct Action Training

Earlham is holding a "Peace with Justice" week, sponsored by the PAGS Department and facilitated by Peace House. Tactical Direct Action Training presents information for learning to minimize injury and maximize effectiveness with the creative use of non-violent action. A training session is scheduled for this weekend as part of Peace With Justice Week. When: Sat., Oct. 6, 2 p.m. Where: Room 105 Landrum Bolling Center. Taxpayers petition County to make Council meetings more accessible

On Friday, the Pal-Item reported that 49 Wayne Co. voters sign form seeking change from county council's morning meetings:

Monica Burns, Richmond's deputy city clerk and a 2006 Democratic county council candidate, presented council with 149 signatures from registered Wayne County voters supporting moving the monthly meetings from 8 a.m. to sometime in the evening.

"At least it gives them (the public) the opportunity to attend, if they so choose," Burns said.  continue reading »

Local activist honors MLK on national radio

Richmond resident Matt Guynn is a part of a activist-oriented training network called Training for Change. Last week, he was in Philadelphia for a training at TFC, and his group was called up by a radio journalist from the show "Weekend America," looking for a group of nonviolent activists to be interviewed for their MLK-focused show, broadcast on January 13th. Mysticism and Activism Retreat

"Changing the World/Changing Ourselves: Looking at Mysticism and Activism” is the title of a retreat which will take place Friday, September 29 from 6 to 9 PM and Saturday, September 30 from 9:30 AM until 4 PM at Virginia Cottage. Participants will explore the range of forms that mysticism can take, sharing personal experiences, through presentations, journaling, discussions and worship sharing. After becoming familiar with mystical approaches to spirituality, the group will apply mystical approaches to concrete social issues with particular attention to war and peace issues and to crime and punishment.  continue reading »
