100-Mile Radius Potluck

Eating locally is as good for our ecosystems as it is for our bodies! If you'd like to practice eating locally and hang out with groovy folks, come to a 100 mile radius potluck on Wednesday, July 2 at 6pm in Clear Creek Park in Richmond (on W Main next to the municipal pool).

What is a 100 mile radius potluck? All the food you bring should have been grown/raised/created within 100 miles of your home. This doesn't mean that Twinkies from Fort Wayne are fair game, since the sugar probably came from Brazil, and the Polysorbate 20 isn't native to ANY ecosystem. So...any guesses on how many salads we'll get?  continue reading »

Richmond Community Poetry Effort

posted under

From Newslink Indiana: An Earlham college professor and his students are urging people in Richmond to participate in an effort to bring back poetry to the community.

English professor David Ebenbach started the Richmond Community Poetry Effort, which is funded by a grant from the college. The effort distributed composition notebooks to different establishments. They hope that people who see the notebooks will write in them.

“Its not that people are petrified and it’s not that poetry is a bad four-letter word. It’s just that people aren’t given the resources or the opportunity to share poems,” said Earlham senior Gabriel Kalmuss-Katz.  continue reading »

Renaissance House: Building Community

posted under

Renaissance House is a Quaker House of Prayer and Hospitality in one of the poorest neighborhoods of Richmond, Indiana. It was created to provide a safe place for people who live on the fringe of society, to come and share a mid-week common meal and worship together. They have a unique worship group comprised of people who live in the community and people from other neighborhoods, who gather together to share good food and conversation, followed by a lively hymn sing and time of intercessory prayer. Their pitch-in meal begins at 6:00pm, and ecumenical worship is from 7:00pm until approximately 8:15pm. Everyone is welcome at their table and worship time. Their worship group is under the care of West Richmond Friends Meeting but they have a wide spectrum of denominations represented and they encourage each other in our own faith journeys.

Jim & Vicki Hair: Connection the Dots

Join us for Peace Forum, a weekly gathering for free food, fellowship, and education, at noon on Thursdays in the Earlham School of Religion Dining Room.
Richmond (and many other small cities) seems to be emptying into the coasts. Jim & Vicki Hair have reversed that trend, moving here from Berkeley 1 ½ years ago. Since then, they have taken Downtown Richmond by storm, opening Richmond Art Works (full of Jim's photographs and other local artists' work) and Unwind Yarn Shop (where Vicki sells yarn and hosts knitting parties). Their vision for this city is inspiring – how will you get on board?
