The Wayne and Union Counties Solid Waste Management District has posted a comprehensive guide showing where things can go for reuse, recycling and disposal in those counties. From air conditioners to cardboard to furniture to tires, the guide provides contact information for organizations that accept those items, hours of operation, and costs involved if any. The next time you're wondering how to make sure your specialty item doesn't end up in a landfill forever and ever, check out this useful guide.

City of Richmond awarded grant for recycling bins

According to the press release, "The National Recycling Coalition (NRC) and Coca-Cola are helping 76 organizations fulfill their New Year's resolutions to recycle more and waste less. This January, the NRC has been busy contacting the recipients of the 2007 Bin Grant program to offer its recycling expertise and arrange for the shipment of 2,500 recycle bins."  continue reading »

America Recycles Day

Saturday, November 10 - 10AM to 2PM - at the Richmond Square Mall
Come out and learn about recycling and conservation with local organizations. Things to do and see include: pictures with Richie the Recycling Raccoon, giveaways, crafts, displays, and local information at booths located in the mall common area. This is a free event for all ages!!

Computer Recycling

There will be a computer recycling event at Earlham College in the Carpenter Hall Parking Lot on Saturday, November 10th. There is a fee for bringing your items, but it can be well worth it to keep these items out of the landfill. For more information contact Earlham College at 765-983-1366. This event is co-sponsored by Recycle Force, LLC.

Bring desktop computers, laptops, monitors, printers, keyboards, peripherals, cables, TVs, cell phones, copiers and microwaves.

Recycling Fee: $10.00 Per Small Load (Car, etc.)
$25.00 Per Large Load (Pickup, Trailer, etc.)

Recycle computers to help rebuild lives

As part of Earlham College's partnership agreement with Recycle Force they have organized a Computer Recycling Event: Saturday, February 24th 9:00 am to 3:00 pm Carpenter Hall Parking Lot

They will accept desktop computers, laptops, monitors, printers, keyboards, computer peripherals, televisions, microwaves, and cell phones. There will be a $10.00 fee per vehicle to help support the event. They strongly encourage you to carpool with friends and family to save money and help reduce emissions.

Recycle Force, LLC is an Indianapolis based back-to-work program for ex-offenders that is dedicated to "Rebuilding Lives while Recycling Computers." More information on Recycle Force, including a great video about the program, can be found at: http://www.recycleindy.com/about.html

Cope Center receives greywater system grant

The Cope Environmental Center has announced the awarding of the Golden Eagle grant from Indianapolis Power & Light to fund the installation of the first residential greywater system in Indiana. IPL Golden Eagle Grants provide funds for projects that will preserve, protect, enhance, or restore environmental and biological resources throughout Indiana. Building community, one computer at a time

A groundbreaking partnership between Earlham College and Indianapolis-based Workforce, Inc., will soon help provide central Indiana with solutions to a number of modern social ills, from hazardous waste contamination of regional landfills to dead beat dads and even the crime rate. As its part of the agreement, Earlham will donate thousands of pieces of College-owned or acquired computer equipment for "de-manufacturing" by RecycleForce, LLC. RecycleForce — dedicated to preventing discarded computer equipment containing toxic chemicals from entering the normal waste stream — employs many ex-offenders associated with Workforce, Inc., a nonprofit group committed to strengthening Indiana families by providing back-to-work programs for formerly incarcerated parents. Both ventures are the creation of former Earlham student and current Indianapolis entrepreneur Gregg Keesling.  continue reading »
